Don’t use your phone number as a Two-Factor Authenticator.
SMS-based 2FA can be bypassed with various methods, making it insecure.
Key Vulnerabilities:
- SS7 Attacks: Where hackers with access to the Global Telecom Protocol can use IMSI numbers to intercept SMS messages.
- SIM Swapping: Attackers trick your mobile carrier into transferring your number to a new SIM card.
- Phishing and Social Engineering: Hackers can manipulate you into sharing verification codes sent via SMS. This is one of the main reasons why people get hacked.
Two better alternatives are using an app like Google Authenticator with a Cloud Backup, or by using a hardware token like YubiKey.
